Would you let Amazon into your home?

Amazon recently released a new product simply known as the Amazon Key. In an attempt to solve the issue of deliveries being stolen from door steps and mailboxes, the Amazon Key allows Amazon delivery workers to enter the house and drop the package off inside. To some, this seems like a great way to protect their incoming packages. To others, this seems like a great way to let a thief into your home. So which side are you on?

Here's some information that could sway your decision.

To start, a recent survey indicated that more than 50% of Amazon Prime members stated that they "definitely would not buy this product." This survey was taken soon after the release of the Amazon Key and thus it has to be remembered that it often takes time for an innovative product such as this to be accepted. Although this data that a majority of Amazon members would definitely not use this product is scary, it might not be accurate until the Amazon Key has thoroughly entered the market.

Another factor to consider is the many uses of this product other than allowing packages to be delivered inside the home. Amazon's website emphasizes another feature of this product which is "No more hiding hiding keys under the mat." This feature is what would actually convince me to buy the Amazon Key (if I owned a home). The Amazon Key can be programmed to grant access to certain people, such as family members and friends, and this permission can be changed at any time. Permission can also be given on a schedule for people like a home cleaner, dog walker, or out-of-town guests. Allowing access to different people for as long as you choose is a great feature that seems to be safer than leaving a key under a mat or giving them a copy of the key. Of course, this type of technology will need to be tested and proven to work before I decide to purchase it.

In my personal opinion, the Amazon Key is a great product with the potential for a profitable future if it is marketed as more than just a solution for packages to not get left on the porch. In order to convince consumers, Amazon marketers will need to carefully market the product as tested, secure, accurate, and trusted to keep families safe while providing convenience. Would you let Amazon into your home with Amazon Key?
